Buyer's guide: Digital signage and kiosks

    Last reviewed

    What it is

Screens and touch kiosks in the showroom: product information, price tags that update, endless-aisle ordering and signs that show offers. Some link to your inventory and website.

    What to look for

    • Content that updates from your product and price data, not by hand
    • Hardware that is durable and easy to service
    • Kiosk ordering that connects to your POS
    • Remote control from one place for several stores
    • Who provides content and who changes it

    Questions to ask a vendor

    • Which parts of the setup are hardware, software and content, and who pays for each?
    • What happens when a screen or kiosk fails?
    • Can shoppers order from the kiosk, and how does it reach our POS?
    • How is the content kept in line with our current prices?
    • What are the contract terms?

    How pricing usually works

Hardware is bought or leased, with a monthly software or content fee per screen. Setup and installation can be extra. Compare the total cost per screen over three years.
