    Buyer's guide: Buying groups

    Last reviewed

    What it is

Groups of independent stores that pool their buying power to get better terms from manufacturers, and often share marketing, training and financing programs. Members usually pay dues or a share of what they buy.

    What to look for

    • Which manufacturers you can buy from through the group and at what terms
    • Dues, fees and any minimum purchases
    • Rebates and how and when they are paid
    • Marketing, financing and training that comes with membership
    • How easy it is to leave and what you owe if you do

    Questions to ask a vendor

    • Which of my current vendors are in your program?
    • What do members pay in total in the first year?
    • How are rebates calculated and when are they paid?
    • Do I have to buy from certain vendors, or stop buying from others?
    • Can I speak with a member store in a market like mine?

    How pricing usually works

Usually dues, a percentage of purchases, or both, with some programs free to join. Value comes from vendor terms and rebates, so compare what you would save on your own buying.
