Buyer's guide: Room planning and design software for designers

    Last reviewed

    What it is

Software designers and showroom staff use to lay out a room, choose furniture and show a client what it will look like. It often links to product catalogs so a plan turns into a quote.

    What to look for

    • A catalog of real products with correct sizes and prices
    • Quotes, orders and client presentations from the same plan
    • Easy sharing of a plan with a client, on a phone as well
    • Support for custom and made-to-order pieces
    • Training that fits a small team

    Questions to ask a vendor

    • Whose product catalogs are included, and can I add my own?
    • Can a plan become a purchase order without retyping?
    • How many designers can use one account?
    • What file types can I import from CAD or other tools?
    • How is my client data stored and who can see it?

    How pricing usually works

Usually a yearly or monthly fee per designer, with higher tiers for catalogs and ordering. Some are free for trade members with paid extras. Ask for the price after the first year.
