Buyer's guide: Marketplaces and drop-ship channels

    Last reviewed

    What it is

Online marketplaces and drop-ship programs where a store lists products it does not hold in stock, or where a manufacturer sells through other sellers' sites. The seller or supplier ships the order direct to the customer.

    What to look for

    • Fees and commissions on each sale
    • Who handles delivery, returns and customer service
    • How product and stock feeds reach the marketplace
    • Control over prices and brand presentation
    • Payment terms and chargeback rules

    Questions to ask a vendor

    • What is the total fee per sale, including payment and shipping charges?
    • Who is responsible for damaged or late deliveries?
    • How fast must we respond to a customer, and what happens if we do not?
    • Can we set minimum prices?
    • How do we leave, and what happens to customer data?

    How pricing usually works

Usually a commission on each sale, sometimes with a monthly seller fee, and extra charges for shipping, ads and returns. Compare the margin that is left after every fee.
