Buyer's guide: Financing, payments and protection

    Last reviewed

    What it is

Companies that let your customers pay over time: store credit cards, installment loans and lease-to-own. They pay you up front and take on the customer's payments, in return for a fee.

    What to look for

    • Approval rates for customers with prime, near-prime and weaker credit
    • The fee the store pays on each sale, shown as a percentage of the sale
    • How fast you get paid after delivery
    • Whether one application can reach several lenders
    • Plain disclosure for customers, so the store is not blamed for the terms

    Questions to ask a vendor

    • What is the merchant fee, and does it change with the customer's credit tier?
    • How many days from delivery to funds in our bank account?
    • What happens when a customer returns the item or the delivery fails?
    • Which POS systems connect so staff do not retype applications?
    • Do you offer any exclusivity requirements or minimum volumes?

    How pricing usually works

Paid by the store as a fee on each financed sale. The fee varies with the program and the customer's credit tier, and promotional-rate offers can add a buy-down cost. Customers pay interest or lease charges. Compare the fee per approved sale, not only the headline rate.
